Cancun: A Mother's Love
It had been a magical day at the beach in Cancun. The surf was fairly high and we were sent crashing into the beach along with the waves.Later as we relaxed around the pool, doing what one can do best in such a climate – as little as possible – someone came by and excitedly passed the word that a sea turtle was laying her eggs by the sea wall.
After some twenty years, when finally adult, the sea turtle swims ashore once a year to the beach of her birth. Living long years, they swim far from their home. But every year once they are grown they return to give birth to a new generation. Like the salmon, they are drawn mysteriously back to the same area. The sea turtle birthing a new generation was such a big deal that even the employees of the hotel gathered to watch. The turtle was at least three feet around and absolutely huge. I was amazed at her size. With her flippers she was six feel across. She came right up to the sea wall which was the wall for the hotel. But within a few minutes most of the crowd lost interest and I and my two friends were able to sit right over the turtle, about seven feet above her watching in amazement.
We were instructed by the hotel staff, that all sea turtles are protected by law. We could watch from afar (like we were), but we were to keep our voices low while the turtle was digging or laying her eggs. After the turtle was done laying her eggs and had covered them up, we could then go up to the turtle. We were cautioned not to disturb the buried eggs; the nests were marked with a special flag and the area around the nest was corded off. As we sat with our legs dangling over the sea wall, with the turtle working below us, I felt the awe of creation descend upon me. I could feel waves of love coming forth from this large beautiful creature. When she finished digging her nest and began laying her eggs, an absolutely profound thing occurred. The shell of the turtle began to glow, like a light under a lampshade. It pulsed brighter then softer –pulsing with her breath. I have never before or since heard of anyone witnessing this type of event.
One of my party asked “how can other people not be in awe of this?” Most people would come by, watch for five minutes or so, and then walk away. It was very clear to me why,” they don’t see what we do; they just see a turtle scraping sand and laying eggs. While we are witnessing and feeling the love vibration that this mother is emanating to bring in her children into this world.” The love that poured forth from the mother turtle enveloped us. The whole process lasted for perhaps forty-five minutes, then the pulsing light went out and she began covering her precious children.
With the nest completely covered, she turned towards the sea. We left the sea wall and joined her as she made her way back to her home and safety of water. As she confidently crept towards the sea, my companions and I crawled with her on our hands and knees. We tried to convey to her our thanks for sharing this beautiful moment. She looked into our eyes and then pushed herself out to sea. By the time we returned to the sea wall, someone had already placed a flag and roped off the nest. With luck, her babies would remain safe, at least until they hatched, and like generations before them, head out into the world on their own. In years to come, the ones who survive will return to the very same beach. How do they find their way back? No one really knows, but perhaps, just possibly they simply follow their mother’s divine love.
